- Read the following pairs of sentences.
- Change the first sentence of each pair to a present participial phrase (+ing).
- Use the noun from the original first sentence as the subject of your main clause.
Example: Susan walked home from school. She found a kitten and took it home.
Walking home from school, Susan found a kitten and took it home.
1. Albert looked out the window. He saw a bicycle collide with a motorbike.
2. The children walked on the beach. They found a lot of interesting seashells.
3. Mai complained about all she had to do. She wasted a lot of time.
4. The team had won the game handily easily . They went out to celebrate their victory. (Hint: Use the perfect form of the present participle.)
5. The policeman wore a bullet-proof vest. He was protected when the suspect shot at him.
6. Michael had been a great college basketball player. He made an excellent head coach. (Hint: The verb in the first sentence is past perfect. What form of the participle will be correct?)
7. Casey used poor judgment. He decided to drag race with his friends and caused a terrible accident. (Hint: For sentence variety, use the phrase after the subject and set if off with commas.)
8. Roberto had argued with his father. He apologized for being so disrespectful. (Hint: What form of the gerund will you use for had argued?)
9. Jackson got to work late every day this week. He got a firm reprimand a warning from his boss.
10. Joan wanted to buy a birthday gift for her mother. She was disappointed to discover the store was closed.
