Present Perfect Tense for Indefinite Past Time:


Present perfect tense can show recency of events, with present time as a point of reference.  The exact time of the event or circumstance is not stated. Adverbs that indicate INDEFINITE TIME are already, lately, and recently. This use of present perfect refers to any time before or up to the present time.

   Example:  Lately, beef prices have soared.  The following sentences discuss some of the reasons for and consequences of this rise in the price of beef. As you practice each sentence, ask yourself if it expresses a cause or a result of the rising cost of beef.

     1.  Mad cow disease exports and reduced imports.

     2.  Corn prices because of drought in the western half of the U.S.        

     3.  Many people   on the Atkins diet, which encourages meat consumption instead of carbohydrates.   

     4.  Restaurants the price of all beef dishes by at least 6%.  

     5.  In supermarkets, beef prices steadily over the last three months.   

    6.  Some customers steaks for hamburgers and ribs.    

    7.  The cost of filet mignon to $22.95 a pound.

   9. This increase is due to the fact that demand supply.  

   10. The average per capita concumption of beef a 10% increase over the past four years.   

   11. Although the ban on Canadian cattle after an incidence of mad-cow disease, live cattle from Canada are still prohibited.

   12. Due to drought conditions in the western U.S., the supply of corn , making it more expensive to feed cattle.   

   13. Due to the higher cost of beef, even restaurants like McDonald's they will probably have to raise prices.    

   14. Many restaurants from choice beef to a less expensive select grade.

   15. Some more expensive cuts from their menus altogether.  

   16. Many consumers not to buy beef until prices go down.

   17.  Prices may dip soon as there a recent case of mad cow disease in the state of Washington.
