Medial /k/ and /g/

When medial /k/ begins a stressed syllable, it is pronounced with a burst of air. Practice these words.

occur occasion account
recall recur accountant

When medial /g/ begins a stressed syllable, it is pronounced as a very hard /g/.  Pronounce these words.

regain again against
ago aghast agree

Pronunciation errors in mid-word occur when students fail to form a /k/ or a /g/ when these sounds are part of a consonant cluster and do not begin a stressed syllable.  For example, the word fact would be fat without the /k/ before the /t/.  The /k/ sound must be formed.  Practice with these words.

fact act pact
walked talked biked
liked wrecked locked

In the same way, bagged would be bad without forming the hard /g/ sound. Try these words.

hugged mugged
dragged bragged
lagged begged

Other words that are difficult to pronounce because you must form the medial /k or /g/ are the following words:

succeed success successful
suggest suggestion suggestive
